Why a Google Business Profile Alone Isn't Enough for a Las Vegas Small Business

A Google Business Profile helps local search, but it's not a complete online presence. Here's what else your Las Vegas business needs.

A Google Business Profile is useful. It puts your business on the map, literally — and when someone in Las Vegas searches for what you do, they’ll see your hours, phone number, and reviews in the local pack. But useful isn’t the same as enough.

Many small-business owners treat their Google Business Profile like it’s their entire online presence. It isn’t. And relying on it alone leaves money on the table.

What a Google Business Profile Actually Does

Your Google Business Profile handles one job: it gets you found in Google Maps and the local search results. When someone searches “plumber near me” or “dental cleaning Las Vegas,” Google pulls up a handful of local businesses with their locations, ratings, and contact info.

It’s a gateway. A very important gateway. But it’s not your storefront.

What It Doesn’t Do

A Google Business Profile can’t tell your story.

It has a few hundred characters for a description. It can’t explain why you’re different, what makes you better, or why a customer should choose you over the competitor sitting two spots below you in the local pack. It can’t showcase your work, build trust over time, or give people a reason to remember you.

It also can’t convert as well as your own website does. A business profile page is Google’s real estate, not yours. You’re a guest there — and Google controls what people see, how it looks, and what happens if their algorithm decides to bury you.

Your profile also can’t capture email addresses, run promotions, or build a customer database. It can’t be optimized for what you want to emphasize. It’s a one-size-fits-most template.

Your Website Does What Your Profile Can’t

Your own website is where you own the conversation.

You control the design, the messaging, the photos, the story. You can show before-and-after work. You can explain your process. You can write blog posts that answer the questions your customers are actually asking — and Google will rank those posts in search results, sending people directly to your site instead of to Google’s local pack.

A website also converts better. In practice, most people don’t call directly from a Google Business Profile — they visit the website first. They want to learn more, see reviews on your own site, check your portfolio, or read testimonials. Your profile is the first touchpoint; your website is where the sale happens.

And unlike a Google Business Profile, your website can be fast, secure, and built to actually perform. It can be optimized for mobile. It can be built with a local SEO foundation from the ground up, so you rank not just in the local pack, but for the broader searches that bring in serious customers.

The Real Gap: Local Visibility + Owned Presence

You need both.

Your Google Business Profile gets you in the local results. Your website converts those visits into customers and builds your brand beyond Google’s control. Together, they’re a complete strategy. One alone is incomplete.

Many Las Vegas businesses stop at their profile because it feels like they’ve “done” local search. They haven’t. They’ve done the minimum.

What About Reviews and Ratings?

Yes, your Google Business Profile handles reviews. And yes, those reviews matter for local ranking.

But reviews on your profile are still on Google’s platform. You can’t export them easily. You can’t build community around them. And if you ever need to move your business or rebrand, those reviews stay with the old profile — they don’t travel with you.

A website with an integrated review section (or a link to your profile reviews) gives you both: the SEO benefit of Google reviews and the control of owning that content on your own site.

So What Should You Actually Do?

Keep your Google Business Profile current and complete. Make sure your hours are right, your photos are good, your category is accurate. Respond to reviews.

But also invest in a real website. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive. It has to be yours — a place where you control the narrative, where customers can learn who you are, and where you can rank for the searches that matter to your business.

The profile gets them to notice you. The website gets them to choose you. And if you already have a website that isn’t producing calls, there are seven fixes worth trying before a redesign.
